Purpose of the Escort Carrier
Escort carriers, also known as Jeep carriers or CVEs (Carrier Vessel Escort), were designed to escort merchant convoys across the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. These carriers provided air cover against submarines, enemy aircraft, and other threats during long transatlantic journeys. They could launch fighter aircraft for anti-submarine patrols or provide support in coastal bombardments, protecting crucial supply lines from enemy interference.
In addition to their role in convoy protection, escort carriers were used to launch airstrikes in support of ground operations, and they participated in anti-submarine warfare missions. The smaller size of escort carriers compared to fleet carriers allowed them to be built more quickly and cheaply, making them ideal for mass production. The escort carriers' relatively lower cost allowed them to be used in secondary roles and in less critical regions, such as islands or smaller naval theaters where large fleet carriers were less effective.
Why Escort Carriers Were Discontinued After World War II
After the war, the need for escort carriers diminished significantly. The advances in radar technology, submarine detection, and the improved effectiveness of larger fleet carriers rendered the smaller carriers less necessary. The growing speed and range of aircraft also meant that larger carriers could handle the mission of providing air cover over vast distances.
