Tyler Perry has denied Meghan Markle's plea to release a documentary about her and Prince Harry on VH1 and BET after Netflix removed it.
The documentary, titled "Harry & Meghan: A Royal Love Story," was filmed by Perry in his home in Montecito, California, and was originally scheduled to air on Netflix in 2021. However, the streaming service dropped the project after the Sussexes announced their decision to step back from their royal duties.
Markle has reportedly been trying to get the documentary released ever since, and she recently reached out to Perry to see if he would be willing to air it on VH1 or BET. However, Perry has declined her request.
In a statement, Perry said: "I am a great supporter of Meghan and Harry, and I wish them all the best. However, I cannot in good conscience release a documentary that I believe is misleading and harmful to the royal family. I hope that Meghan and Harry will reconsider their decision to release this documentary, and I wish them all the best in their future endeavors."
The Sussexes have not yet responded to Perry's statement.
Here are some of the reasons why Perry may have declined Markle's request:
He may not believe that the documentary is accurate or fair.
He may not want to damage his relationship with the royal family.
He may not want to get involved in a controversy.
It is also possible that Perry simply does not have the rights to release the documentary. Netflix may still own the rights to the film, even though it has decided not to air it.
Whatever the reason, Perry's decision is a blow to Markle's efforts to get the documentary released. It is unclear if she will be able to find another platform to air the film.
